Imitation or one more suprising coincidence?

Dubai Lynx recently handed a Gold Award in the outdoor category for Aramex campaign designed by FP7 Doha.
Here at ArabAd, we were stunned to stumble across a similar concept and execution designed by DDB Brazil for a competitive brand: Fed Ex that is!

The exit argument has always been "Great Minds think alike..."
Well great! & NO COMMENTS...
But a copycat ad handed a Gold Dubai Lynx Award, ain't that too much? Too bad...
See for yourself, then draw your own conclusions...
Last time, we pinpointed a copycat ad (See below: Chateau Musar, Chateau Kefraya), the feedback was puzzling...you can check it out in ArabAd March issue...In short, the reply was: yeah, so what?! Everyone copies anyone, that's life, that's how advertising works; and the best awards are loaded with copycats and the likes; you are wasting your time busting imitators, it's nothing but a normal behaviour in our industry.... I swear that was one of the replies; the second letter just claimed having never ever seen the original ad...Huuuh yeah, right! They work in advertising but never notice the ads around...So funny, we might die!

Cheers & Hope tarnished

Created by creative director Ahmad Abdine Beck from Saatchi & Saatchi Beirut, the Chateau Kefraya ad was published in 2003 & won a Pikasso bronze award in 2004; whereas, the Chateau Musar ad was published early 2009 by Horizon FCB Beirut.

La Vache Picon & Me KIRI

Here we go again... I guess No comments would be sufficient to describe this bloody copycat...Who copied who? That is another question... Answers and all details in ArabAd Jan Issue 2008. Meanwhile, you are allowed to crack up till you drop cuz no copycat has been that far yet. Same product category, same casted litlle kid, same product innovation, same packaging, same treatment, same photo composition, all is sama sama as they say in Indonesia... And this is as ridiculous as one can get....

To comment or not to comment? Well, it's O SòO`O Funny! O TV is Michel Aoun's Own TV station. The Lebanese infamous GENERAL launched recently his Own private TV and branded it O for Orange, probably his favourite colour selected to dressed up his party and its entire corporate identity.

Bloody Tasty Wine yet Soulless Creativity

Here is an ad for Lebanese wine Kefraya with the vine artistic rendering of Lebanon's map. Copy reads: "the soul of a country in a fine wine" >> L'âme d'un pays dans un grand vin". Although granted a Pikasso* Bronze in 2006, such concept is not far-fetched and has been applied to various products (two similar ones, featured on this blog , promote cars & alcohol ) and the most striking resemblance is the one for the Spanish wine designed by Tandem Campmany Guasch DDB, Spain- click for the proof. Do we have to remind ourselves every once in a while -- so to justify 'anemic' creativity-- of that old adage.... "Great Minds......think alike"... We don't think that great and alike could cohabitate in any form.. Anyhow... Best is to let Creativity roll wildly, as an avalanche would do; let the rage against "the ape movement" explode while it paves the way to a thunder of Originality, for God's Sake & dire powerful communication.
